Your client doesn’t care about your tech
Dec 19, 2022Why basing your pricing on tech is a big mistake…
You’re always looking for the shiny new box to make your life easier. It cost a lot of money, and you need to raise prices to pay for it.
You proudly tell your clients, “we can now do x, y, and z!” That’s great, but your client really doesn’t care about your tech.
This is a dangerous road to play on.
Very quickly, you’ll fall into the trap of basing all your services around the cost of the gear. This is appropriate in some cases(when you need to rent gear for a client), but the majority of your value lies in efficiently solving a client’s problem with technology.
You need to see yourself as a superhero, with production superpowers. Could you switch a virtual event with OBS just as easily as vMix?
One systems may take more work to configure, but yes, in many cases you could.
Does using open source software make your skills any less valuable? Of course not.
Clients want you to solve their problem, that’s why they contact you in the first place. Understand this, and you’ll unlock the earnings potential behind your greatest resource: your skills.
Focus on your skills, not your tech.
